What do I have to do? What do I need? Do I have what it takes?

First and foremost: yes, you have what it takes! You don’t need any special qualification or previous experience, we’ll give you all the training you need.

All you need is a willingness to learn new things, and a little spare time – not much, none of us has lots of spare time! If you join Tignale Soccorso you must be willing to cover a minimum of three shifts per month (two day shifts and one night, or vice versa. Shifts can be split into half-days).

Each crew is made up of a driver, a team leader and a technician. You’ll start – as we all did – as the fourth member of the team. A “fourth” is a trainee, and as such you can watch and learn without any fear of making mistakes. A trainee is never given any kind of responsibility. Once you feel up to it, and only when you’ve had enough training, you can move on to become a driver or technician. After working as a technician on a minimum of 15 call-outs to major incidents you can become a team leader, if you want to.

Worried about the courses? We all were at first. But you’ll soon get into your stride; you’re in the same boat as your fellow students and the course is very practical. A technician has to complete a course of 120 hours of lessons - theory and practice - which are held at times that suit everyone. A big commitment? Let’s be honest … if you were involved in an emergency would you feel happy about being helped by untrained people? We have a responsible job to do and we do it conscientiously, but we also thoroughly enjoy working together as a group.
